BNP to contest borough mayoral elections

Peter Dominiczak
9 Feb 2010

Politicians today expressed their anger after it emerged that the British National Party is to field candidates for the May mayoral elections in three London boroughs.

Candidates representing the far-Right party will campaign in the boroughs of Lewisham, Newham and Hackney, sparking outrage from anti-fascist organisations and local politicians.

The BNP has not released details of who will stand but Bob Bailey, the party's London organiser, said he is convinced people will vote for the party.

He said: “We need to raise money before we can announce the full details. But it is time the BNP stood in these elections. People in these boroughs have asked us to field candidates because they are so unhappy with the other political parties.”

A spokesman for Unite Against Fascism said: “Hackney, Lewisham and Newham are proud, multi-cultural and multi-racial London boroughs. They are a living testament to everything the BNP would like to destroy.”

I am not pleased that the BNP will be fielding a candidate. Newham Council as a 54-60 Labour majority Council, but Labour is really terrible. The BNP fielding a BNP candidate will help help Labour. Robin Wales (Newham Mayor) is just awful.

Even if people are fed up with Labour in Newham, they want a party like the BNP to come to power.

I am sure that Newham Labour will be going door to door and saying to every black or asian person, if you don't vote for us the BNP will get it.

Of course if the BNP do win a Council seat in Newham, it will be interesting that the Olympics are held there....

It's intersting the way the Lib/Lab/Con-tricksters feel angry about the British National Party fielding Mayoral candidates. The irony of course is that they have the cheek to call the BNP fascists. Have they never heard of democracy?

As a white person, living in Hackney for 6 years (and not a middle-class part of Hackney either), I can say that I`ve *never* been subjected to racial abuse due to my colour. I have heard black and Asian people being subjected to it, however.

Alan G said "If they do stand, they will get a serious beating (democratically, in the vote, you understand)."

All things being equal of course they would as the ethnic demographic of Newham is that the BNP's target voter makes up less than 35% of the borough's population, which highlights their point about uncontrolled immigration. Still these types of elections have traditionally very low turnouts so anything could happen.

"I lived in Newham for 4 years - Mike Patton"

I,a white fella from up north, have lived here since 1976. It's a great place and getting better by leaps and bounds.

Fascists do have a few hundred votes here, but they haven't run any candidates since
1) the first GLA election in 2000
2) the Police raid that closed down the "Redwatch" website
depending on your point of view.

In the 2004 election for Greater London Assembly and Mayor, they were beaten by Spoilt Papers in 9/20 wards.

If they do stand, they will get a serious beating (democratically, in the vote, you understand).

So if I understand this correctly the story is that a legitimate political party is standing for office utilising democratic processes?

Interesting.

@ P Staker. Since when is being an economic migrant a sin? My parents came here in the early 60s from Jamaica to work, and my god did they work hard! As a result my family are graduates, home owners, professionals and business owners. We have contributed far more tax than average and provided employment opportunities to others. We are proud of our heritage and proud to be British. I do not see why our contribution should be ignored due to our ethnicity. So my suggestion to my white working class brothers is to lose the chip on your shoulders, do not support the Nazis and do what we did - work hard and study hard.

The BNP are a betrayal to this country's proud history and traditions. Their followers are foul racists and evil violent doers. Please don't forget the Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho bombings. Don't forget the terrorist BNP supporter with the weapons arsenal found in his house. They are traitors and scum who will be defeated at every turn!

I noticed you had to wade through about two thirds of my comments before you could find anything to point out of any value! I don't dispute what you are saying and likewise I don't want economic migrants, criminals etc, from abroad, settling down in our country: point taken, although rather obvious to the decent law abiding, tax paying citizen in the UK! If however you want to argue this point, then what is your stance in relation the NON-ECONOMIC migrants in this country, who like us British expats, living abroad, have made a valuable contribution to the UK, their chosen country of residence? I hope you can see the point I'm making! Please therefore don't divert from the real issues I'm trying to address with Nazi scrum politics, remaining conveniently mute and silent on everything else I have stated ! If however you would you also be kind enough to follow up on all the rest of my comments and share your thoughts with all the other readers on this forum, I would be glad to hear what your thoughts are!

Cllr Alan Hall, Lewisham

Lewisham also has a very proud history of allowing mass immigration and ultra left policies to turn a once half decent area into a complete toilet.

It also has entirely ignored the former communities of Lewisham that have been forced out by your multicultural utopia ideologies.

But i guess that the only way Labour can survive, as they hinted at over in Barking, is by 'changing the demographic'

Keep on living in dreamworld, your time is up

"Also why is it convenient for us as British expats to settle down comfortably, live and work, in many cases, in their tens of thousands, without any problems in many parts of the world such as Spain, Dubai, Hong Kong etc"

Lee Walker, North London

Because lee, when Brits move to Spain, Dubai, Hong Kong, France etc they take something with them called money and buy their own homes, so they invest as soon as th ey have moved there.

Or if renting they pay their own way, you don't get given free housing and benefits in these countries, so please don't play the "what about Brits abroad card" as it does not wash as the argument is easily won.

The majority ofpeople that come here are economic migrants, they are not bringing anything with them, just here to take out.

I agree with Jeff from Lewisham. To add further, their hidden agenda as usual is down to gutter politics, spreading hate and division between people and races, particularly preying on the weak, illiterate, uneducated and inarticulate sections of the working class communities in this country, the majority of course who are however decent, law-abiding citizens, unfortunate enough, in some cases, to sleep walk their way into following these extremist policies. Mr Griffins on BBC Question Time, a few months ago, spoke about the Ice Age and the original white indigenous peoples of this country. If he wants to apply this logic, he should be consistent and apply it to all places and people around the world! For example who were the indigenous peoples of Australia, New Zealand, North and South America and parts of Africa before being colonized by us, the white imperial powers? Also why is it convenient for us as British expats to settle down comfortably, live and work, in many cases, in their tens of thousands, without any problems in many parts of the world such as Spain, Dubai, Hong Kong etc. We should also remind Mr Griffins and Co when he fills up his petrol tank, where the oil is coming from! In reality if they want people to return to their ancestral roots, perhaps this policy should be applied to everyone who left the UK since the ICE AGE too! The bottom line is there are two sides to every argument and you can't pick and choose the bits that suit you!

No matter where we go in the world there's an element of racism or prejudice. As far as the BNP fielding candidates this should comes as no surprise as the main parties aren't dealing with issues that some of the electorate want addressed. So it's the main parties should be blamed for creating the vacuum that allows parties like the BNP to exist and thrive.

Whether we like it or not the BNP are getting bigger by the day,and that is purely down to this rotten corrupt government ignoring its own people....Labour are unwilling to give the taxpaying british (regardless of skin colour) a fair crack at anything,ie housing, jobs,NHS etc etc and can never be trusted to secure our Borders from illegal immigrants pouring through.

Its of course not suitable for public statement for some reason but it has to be said anyway, racism is seen as a one way thing ie committed only by whites.
This is far from the case and in these matters when whites are the victims of abuse equality and justice are ignored. Its as if the powers that be think this is an irellavancy.
Cllr Hall would do well to think about serious policies to correcting this. Social stability depends on equal obligations and justice for all not just rights for some.

The BNP have as much right to campaign in these elections as anyone other party. If these boroughs are as multicultural and anti-racist as the article claims, then they shouldn't be worried about the campaign as people will just refuse to back them. I suspect the other parties are very worried at the fast rate of support the BNP are recieving. And for this, we have only our current government to blame. If they had listened to the people of this country instead of giving all our rights away to Europe and putting every other ethnic minority ahead of the indigenous peole of the UK, then the BNP would have no support at all, but down to Tony Blair & Gordon Brown, I fear the BNP are going to do exceptionally well in this election because people are sick of being ignored and treated like unwelcome visitors in their own country.

Alan Hall's approach is the right one. The way to defeat the BNP is to tackle and defeat their arguments head on, not to try and outlaw them or ban them. I genuinely think that different nationalities and ethnic groups get on well in Lewisham and the one thing that will unite them further will opposition to a BNP Mayoral candidate.

The country has not magically grown more racist in the last 13 years. Disastrous social policies and the arrogance and greed of mainstream politicians have driven people into their arms. To many people they're not "fascists", they're the only party that at least pretends to listen. While the other parties are chasing each other around trying to be the most middle class and liberal and ignoring key issues most people disagree with them on (mass immigration, the EU), they're going to hoover up votes no matter how loudly you shout "Nazi". Personally I would not vote for them but in the last 10 years I've watched people's attitudes to them change from contempt to sympathy.

Well said P Staker's.

I lived in Newham for 4 years and I tell you what, being a white person, your are not made welcome by the locals. Racial abuse on a dialy basis was the norm; got so bad I had to leave and do the usual "white flight" thing like many other people do.

“Hackney, Lewisham and Newham are proud, multi-cultural and multi-racial London boroughs".

Multi-cultural boroughs? Don't they mean mono-cultural boroughs?

I hate when UAF and other similiar organisations speak out yet fail to understand what the people who live like really think of the place. They can't because they are branded racist.

I was surprised but not shocked to hear that the British National Party would be fielding a candidate in the Lewisham
Mayoral election. Lewisham has a long and proud history of standing up to racist and nazi parties and I'm sure that this will continue in May - when we win the moral argument and defeat them at the ballot box.

They should be venting the anger at themselves as to why people are voting for this party.

If the BNP gained over a million votes in the Euro Election how many more do they think the BNP will get in the forthcoming main ones?

I reckon the BNP are going to get at least double if not more, so main 3 parties are you listening yet, or still ignoring issues which worry many.
