A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Pc Keith Blakelock in the Broadwater Farm riots 25 years ago.

Scotland Yard announced today that the man - who would have been 15 at the time of the murder - was questioned for four days before released on bail this afternoon.

The move - described by Yard insiders as "significant" - comes after detectives launched a new murder inquiry into the case in 2003.

The man was arrested in Suffolk on suspicion of Pc Blakelock's murder. The man, originally from Tottenham was taken to Bury St Edmunds police station where he was questioned.

The arrest marks the 25th Anniversary since PC Blakelock was murdered during the Broadwater Farm Riots on 6th October 1985.

Pc Blakelock, 40, a local beat officer, was hacked to death on the estate during the riot on 6 October, 1985.

Three men, Winston Silcott, Engin Raghip and Mark Braithwaite, were convicted of murder and sentenced to life but all three were cleared by the Court of Appeal three years later.

Police said Pc Blakelock's widow, Elizabeth Johnson, had been informed of the latest development.

In 2004 specialist officers excavated a rear garden of an address in Tottenham, believing crucial evidence was buried there.

Police launched a new appeal in 2005 when they released graphic images of the dead officer's blood-stained overalls.

The image of his riot gear showed the dark blue uniform ripped in several places and covered in masking tape.

The officer suffered terrible injuries and was attacked with a number of weapons, including knives and machetes.

Police arrested a man in 2005 in connection with the murder but he was later released with no further action.
