Avalanches kill 157 in Afghan mountain pass
10 Feb 2010At least 157 people have been killed in avalanches that blocked a mountain pass north of the Afghan capital Kabul, trapping hundreds more in their vehicles.
Police and troops using helicopters, bulldozers and ambulances have rescued another 2,600. Bodies were found inside cars and strewn along the road.
More than 24 avalanches have hit the 12,700-foot-high pass since Monday, blocking 2.1 miles of road and burying vehicles.
About 400 police and 100 local volunteers have been digging out survivors for the last 24 hours. Five hundred Afghan soldiers were also mobilised and coalition troops sent four Chinook helicopters.
Search teams today reached dozens more of the stranded.
