An Afghan warlord believed to have allowed Osama Bin Laden to flee a US attempt to capture him after the September 11 attacks in 2001 has been killed by a suicide bomber.

Mohammad Zaman Ghamsharik, better known as Haji Zaman, was among 15 people killed when a bomber detonated explosives today at a meeting of tribal elders and returning Afghan refugees.

Zaman and another warlord from the Jalalabad area, Hazrat Ali, commanded Afghan forces who cornered the al Qaeda leader in the Tora Bora mountains in December 2001 but allowed him to escape.

Zaman, a former Mujahideen and Afghan army commander, ordered his 4,500 soldiers in Jalalabad to surrender their weapons to the Taliban five years ago and fled into exile in Paris. He returned to Afghanistan last year and was regarded as one of the most powerful figures in the east of the country.

The bomber detonated his charge in Khogyani district as local elders met several hundred Afghans who had recently returned from Pakistan.
