Going Underground: the Queen is presented with her own Tube sign at Aldgate

The Queen shows signs of enjoying Underground trip

The Queen was given her own personalised Tube sign during a visit to a London Underground station today.

She picked up the specially commissioned “Buckingham Palace” version of the famous logo on a tour of Aldgate station.

The Queen beamed as the gift was handed over in the ticket hall of the zone one stop.

Howard Collins, London Underground's chief operating officer, said: “We asked the staff what would be an appropriate gift for the Queen.

“They all decided that the symbol of the Underground which is known throughout the world would be perfect, even though there isn't a station there.

“The Queen thought it was marvellous. She said What a fantastic gift'. There was a big smile on her face. She was saying about how busy [the Underground] is. She travelled on the Tube as a young lady.”

She can thank God that she doesn't have to travel on the London Underground. Stick to the horse and cart. Good job she doesn't have to use it otherwise she would be late for all her appointments, or held up for two hours in the tunnel.

Oh bless her .... she actually thought that the grateful people of London have given her Aldgate Station!

David, London - to put your rather dismissive comment in perspective - would you travel that way if you didn't have to? Didn't think so!

I should think the Queen of England would be spared the pit-sniffing experience the rest of us endure. Royalty of her calibre carries some privileges, surely!

At least some of us travelled on the underground as a young lady. Or young man.

At least Tone didnt abolish the monarchy; seems sensible.

Isn't she fantastic, and what a lovely smile....and those who want to abolish Royalty would prefer someone like President Mandelson to her!!!!!!

Doubt i'll see her with her face in someone armpit on the central line in the middle of summer then? No, guess not.
