Election set for 6 May as Gordon Brown pledges 'I won't let you down'
Joe Murphy, Political Editor10 Mar 2010
Bookmakers stopped taking bets on a 6 May general election today after Gordon Brown made the date a near-certainty.
The Prime Minister confirmed that the crucial pre-election Budget will be held in a fortnight's time, on 24 March, which effectively precludes a snap, early polling day. He then turned a speech to a City audience into a politically-charged address that put the economy and his own character as leader at the heart of Labour's bid for a fourth term.
“For better or for worse, with me what you see is what you get,” he said, adopting a strategy of admitting rather than covering up his perceived weaknesses while stressing other strengths. He ended the speech on an emotive note by pledging: “I won't let you down.”
A 6 May election means that quarterly growth figures out 13 days earlier could become critical to Labour's success or failure. Poor manufacturing results today dented hopes they would be good news — industrial production fell by 0.4 per cent in January.
Shadow business minister Kenneth Clarke said Mr Brown had overseen “the biggest fall in manufacturing output in modern times”.
The election timetable now looks set to be that the Prime Minister will see the Queen to seek the dissolution of Parliament on 6 April, the day after the Easter bank holiday, which would allow up to a week of parliamentary “wash up” when vital Bills are chosen to go through with cross-party backing. A formal campaign of just over three weeks would probably begin with manifesto launches in the week starting Monday 12 April.
Uniquely, the campaign will be dominated by three televised debates between the three main party leaders, starting with the first on 15 April. They will be tightly-controlled, lasting 90 minutes each with a dozen questions and no audience participation.
A surprise 22 April election is not impossible but it would now mean cancelling the Budget, which would unsettle the markets. Under election law Mr Brown could even wait until June but that is politically not feasible because local elections are timed for 6 May and Labour faces a pasting in town halls.
Mr Brown today argued that he had the “character” to lead Britain through to economic recovery “and now is no time to turn back”.

So let's put panic in his breastie and turn the heat up on him this coming election.

Most know McBean is dangerous and divisive. His socialist calls are for fair and equal. His actions support only Labour and State workers, making the rest second class, under social PC laws and controls.
His skill is 1984 Doublespeak to reverse the meaning of words. He speaks of 'all in his power' for whatever group, ie the Army, is classic. They still use 1970's Land Rovers on mined roads. Soldiers, Generals and Coroners state lack of funds and kit are killing people.
Labour were bust in 2008, kept afloat by Whelan and Unite union. This mirrors the UK under McRuin.
60% of incomes outside London are from State welfare and jobs. These help Labour MP's with half the number of voters as English MP's.
Most in the UK depend on the State, and are incapable of independent living. 1 in 4 work for the State with pay and pensions way ahead of the private sector. 1 in 4 are unemployed on State welfare. Manufacturing in 1997 was 20% of the economy, in 2010 it is 13%. 1 in 4 is in temporary work. Only 1 in 4 has a real job producing tax.
His mental attitude and abilities were revealed in his boats 'I ended boom and bust'. Deluded with power, useless at finance and economics, he was 100% wrong. His delusion is total control, and State knows best.
Irresponsible in managing State funds, he uses them not for proper support for society, but to buy votes.
Interest on Brown Debt destroys the UK.

I have found that goverments have a relatively marginal effect on the fortunes of a country (with the possible exception of the Thatcher goverment) - forces ouside of their control far exceed the forces within their control. I managed to make a great deal of money both under the Major goverment and during the Blair/Brown years and found them equally benign. I am more than able, and within reason, willing to pay higher taxes to help the recovery of public finances - much of which would have been incurred by whichever party had been in power. I am often feel that commentators who vent such spleen on either of the political parties forget a central truth: that if you don't have the smarts, energy and resilience to be a successful wealth generator its not the goverment (of whichever hue) which is the country's problem - its you.

Does that Character include :-
1) Being disloyal to the former leader, plotting and scheming behind his bag and getting thugs like Damien Mcbride to smear your opponents
2) Increasing the deficit during a time of growth when most of the experts warned of a credit bubble
3) Never having the courage to stand for an election until now when there is no choice.
4) Proclaiming the end of bust and the economic cycle and not being able to forsee future changes.
5) Promising a referendum on Lisbon, not turning up for the signing and sneaking in when other leaders had left to sign and not get blamed.
6) Opposing Thatcher when she was Prime Minster and then trying to bask in her limelight once he had stolen the Premiership from Blair.
7) For develoution but still sitting the English Parliament as a Scottish MP
8) Undermining the British state in the 70's and 80"s on the pay role of the former soviet Union.
9) Taking away the 10p tax rate from the lowest earners in society.
10) Destroying pensions for the private sector.
11) Undermining our armed forces.
12) Bullying staff defenceless to defend themselves.
13) Getting everything wrong and when faced with no option ie saving the banks with tax payers money, claiming that this somehow was a choice based on knowledge and forsite.
etc etc etc etc

I need future plans from all parties and it just isn't happening from the Tories (who are rich from a lying tax exile). I see a chancellor who taxed the best private pensions schemes in the world out of existance, leaving people to struggle through retirement.
I see a Chancellor who introduced more and more stealth taxes that hit the population so hard that he started a recession.
I see a PM who can never answer a straight question.
I see a PM who promised a referendum on the European Constitution, then lied his way out of it.
I see a Chancellor who spent thirty per cent more each month than he collected, bankrupting the nation. (and continues to do so)
I see a PM who has declared that Britain's future is not in manufacturing and so is happy to see the dole queue longer than it has ever been.

Brown has always been a let down he has no policies of his own he waits for everyone else so that he can take them as his own. The reason people think there is no difference between Labour and Tory is because Brown is speaking like a Tory and using Tory language most of the time Blair did this how do you think that everyone voted for him then as soon as you have all voted them in they revert back to the left. Brown is evening copying Camerons speeches and words and slogans for the election take no notice of Brown we want himn the Unions are in charge of Lab;our they are putting union men into safe labour seats so if people vote them in you will get a marxist government and they will be there for ever so e veryone go out and vote but do not vote labour because if you do you will not be able to call your soul your own Labour are well on the way with this give the Tories a chance at least they have policies and stick up for us take no notice of Toffs etc I could not care less as long as the country is bought back from the brink

Is that why, under Labour's watch, we've seen the closure of steel factories at Redcar, textiles factories in the North East, the gradual destruction of the local Post Office etc etc.?
The only reason the Tories would have to make cuts is because Labour have destroyed our economy to the extent that the current debt is simply unsustainable.
Only an idiot would place the blame for any cuts the Tories make at their door rather than at the feet of this appalling Labour government!!!
The Tories will be doing so out of necessity, not on a whim, because Labour has left the whole country in such dire straits, including middle England, manufacturing and any other deluded people who think that sham of a party actually stand up for their rights!

Judging by the comments here, the polls are way off, as most people want to see Brown out of No10.
(The really worrying thing though is how are we going to pay for all the money Labour has borrowed. Brown was asked today at PMQs today if he were to be re-elected would he charge VAT on food, children's cloths and newspapers. He totally side stepped the question. I think we may as well take that as some sort of, yes.)
Brown has really made a mess of the economy and governing this country in general. How he thinks there is a realistic chance of him getting re-elected is beyond comprehension. He often refers to his moral compass etc etc; but he has turned out to be a bigger lair as Tony Blair. I would not trust a word he says.

Gordon Brown single handedly ruined this country - as Chancellor and unelected Prime Minister. A budget surplus in 1997 turned into the biggest ever national debt, tens of thousands additional civil servants who can't be fired, but expect pay rises and final salary pensions; and a woefully underfunded military embroiled in wars nobody wanted. Brown is still borrowing over £500,000,000.00 EVERY DAY (repayable in 2050) just to keep the public sector afloat).
Brown definitely has less "character" than a demented toad.
Control freak? Paranoid? Psychologically flawed? Bully?
The worst Prime Minister ever to have crossed the threshold of 10 Downing Street.
God help every man, woman and child in the UK if this Communist government gets re-elected.

What a complete moron he thinks he can lead us out of recession does he(so lets see I earn £10 a week and spend £1,000) writing cheques that is how long do you think before the bank manager stops paying the cheques and has a serious word in my shell like.
if we do not get rid of this cretin and the other one living next door whats left of this country will be down the toiler

Gordon Brown is totally deluded. His economic management has left the country virtually bankrupt.
The more he talks about the economy, the more people will realise he was the chancellor for over a decade. He is the man who took the country into recession, not the banking collapse - it was a major component but not the sole reason.

So Gordon you are the new Superman! Who created the Financial Services Authority (FSA)? What did the FSA fail to do? Regulate the City so we got RBS, HBOS and Northern Rock. Yes, it was you when Chancellor and under your Government. The reason the UK public debt is so massive is the near total failure in UK Financial Services Regulation. We the UK taxpayer will be paying off trailer parks in Louisiana or estates in Cleveland USA.

Gordon Brown's fiscal policies have led this country to the brink of bankruptcy. He is despised at home and abroad, yet he believes he "saved the world" and has the character to lead us out of recession! Such delusion beggars belief. I wouldn't employ him to run a whelk stall.

Character? This from the man who decimated the UK's pensions industry. This from the man who sold half our gold reserves at the bottom of the market, having telegraphed his intentions. This from the man who had to be humiliated into agreeing UK residency rights for the Ghurkas. This from the man who until recently was denying the need for any cuts at all in public expenditure!
And the alternative is a wannabee who can't even ensure that his senior colleagues pay UK tax!
Heaven help us!

In the wake of some of the dispossessed stories I've been reading here's a couple of ideas rather than continually taking money from people like me:
1. The state benefits paid to any family cannot exceed the lesser of either the net pay of your last job or average earnings after a notional deduction for income tax and national insurance.
2. All benefit payments for long term claiments to be made in vouchers exchangeable for heating, food, toiletries, cap. exp. for cots etc., clothing and poss. petrol. Not to include ciggies and alcohol.
3. A total rethink on the tax credit scheme particularly the the £ 25k de minimis limit for changing awards and repayimng moneys.
In addition to this a closing of all final salary govt. pension schemes to new employees and for those with less than ten years service, other than those in the armed forces.

I forgot to add. all economics is dependent upon confidence. Gordon could vastly increase confidence in economic recovery by going before the election. After all the House Of Lords is a pretty cushy number.

Brown has expanded the State jobs bill by at least 1 million. This costs taxpayers about £25 bn a year plus pensions. Those people are no longer available for private sector work to earn and pay tax to fund all the State jobs. 1 in 4 work for the State. 1 in 4 is out of work. 1 in 4 is on temp work. Only 1 person has a real job.
Brown has increased State pay by 15% since 1997 with productivity down 4%. While private pay is flat and productivity up 18%. He is buying voters.
Brown has put the economy into meltdown with his huge bust by removing bank regulations. It is hidden under £200bn of Fantasy money to pay State jobs, and 0.5% interest rates to delay soaring repossessions and unemployment. The UK would have riots and a Winter of Discontent if not for the emergency funding. It is short term. Interest on Brown debt is crushing the UK.
Brown is a Soviet style dictator. Control the people with slogans on fairness and equality. Maximum tax to fund Labour's voters. 60% of incomes in Wales, Scotland and North East are from tax through State jobs and welfare. Labour have fixed a voting system so those areas have more MP's. And the Postal Vote system is corrupted so voting is done by a householder for occupiers, real or not, rather than by individuals!
Brown is the most damaging and dangerous politician the UK has had since Halifax in 1940 pressed for a deal to let Hitler run the UK.

He could stop wasting money on hundreds of quangos and government interference.
Set the people free. You cant even use a camera in the streets without some jobs worth asking questions. A plumber told me he thought of quitting as exams every year cost a fortune but they, maybe Europe, keep changing the rules. To sell ones house is a nightmare, once a surveyors report was sufficient, not anymore, you have to get all manner of bits of paper about green this and green that.

"For our task above all else is to preserve and expand the jobs - and lift the standards of life - of the British people." er by allowing unfettered immigration which puts pressure on social services, housing, and drives wages downward. Does Gordon have a second job as a contortionist? I hope he does, because it's the only way he'll make ends meet.
