Suicide rail boss ‘bribed by contractors’
12 Mar 2010Transport police have accused five railway contractors of bribing a senior Network Rail employee in return for deals.
Investigators believe that the men lavished Anthony Burgess, 45, with cash and luxury gifts, including watches and a sports car.
The rail manager and his wife Marian, 51, committed suicide at their home in Clavering, Essex, in January last year.
Mr Burgess had been sacked from his £75,000-a-year job overseeing the refurbishment of company offices following an internal inquiry.
The accused appeared at City of Westminster magistrates' court earlier this week, a spokesman said.
All five, who are charged with offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, were released on conditional bail and ordered to return on April 20 for committal.
