John Terry breathalysed after car hits Chelsea security guard
Matthew Beard, Olympics Editor17 Mar 2010
John Terry was breathalysed at his Surrey home in the early hours of this morning after his car hit a Chelsea security guard and broke his leg.
The player was at the wheel of a Range Rover alongside his wife Toni when the accident happened.
The vehicle was surrounded by fans and photographers as he left Stamford Bridge following the team's exit from the Champions League after a defeat by Inter Milan last night.
One report claimed that Terry's car hit the man after he stepped on the accelerator to get clear of the crowd.
The England player told police he was not aware he had hit anyone. His spokesman said he was driving slowly and only found out what happened when he received a call from the club an hour later. The spokesman added that the player had apologised to the guard in a phone call.
The Met said it had launched an investigation into allegations that the driver failed to stop after a collision.
Police visited his home where he had a breath test. He was not arrested and it is understood he passed the test.
Terry's spokesman Phil Hall blamed photographers for obstructing his car. He told Goal.com UK: “John was not driving very fast and a security guard waved him through.”
Chelsea said in a statement: “There was an unfortunate accident. In the melée that ensued a member of Chelsea's security staff was knocked to the ground.”
Terry was stripped of the England captaincy last month after his affair with a lingerie model.

When players emerge from the car park spectators stand behind barriers and are always well behaved. The security guards in this case were having to hold back press photographers who were clamouring round the car and banging on it to get Terry to look at them. It's reported that Terry's car is an automatic, so would only have been moving on tickover - 1 or 2mph.
The story here is that even 80 minutes after the game finished the press photographers were out of control and it was their behaviour that forced the security to intervene. It was the hysteria of the press that caused this incident.
The mail has often reported that the paparazzi caused the death of famous people. This report tells us they're still out of control. I hope they apologised to the steward too.

Driving at 1-2 mph! About the speed he was moving when Eto'o outwitted him to score last night's winner.

The steward has now flown out to Dubai to "rest and recuperate" and Terry will fly out with a big bunch of flowers and beg for forgiveness!

Get a life people!
I'm no fan of Terry, but for goodness sakes - accidents happen, especially in the scrum the players in the big teams have to go through to leave their grounds after a game.
Did Terry hit the man, or did the man hit Terry (after being pushed by the crowd)? In my experience, crowds SERIOUSLY complicate questions of culpability. And oh yeah - minor bumps and bangs on the side of an SUV COULD go unnoticed if that was the norm on game days. It certainly isn't an open and shut case. Factual information would help, but that's much less interesting for the boo-boys, isn't it!

What Ancelotti actually said was that he had not seen the incident himself and that he would need to view a video replay before he could comment!
Unconfirmed rumours indicate that the steward has been in touch with Max Clifford in order to tell his side of the story. A Fleet Street bidding war is believed to be imminent.

I agree with E Sullivan. From some of the comments here I wonder what goes through people's mind!!! Some infer that he did it on purpose. Why do people always gather like hunters to give negative comments, I am sure many would not have said all these things about Terry if it hadn't been "big news".
Come on people, get a mind of your own, and also support England whoever plays.

Perhaps he should have calmed down before leaving the ground lets face it he was having a right go at the officials before he left the pitch the "poor soul".He really does need to take a good look at himself some would say he passionate others would say he is a pillock.

What a bad loser! I am so glad he is no longer the England Captain. It was a disgrace seeing him walk up to the ref after the match yesterday and moan about decisions that did not go his clubs way.

A steward was injured when he got his leg trapped under one of the wheels.”
Really? Somehow I suspect the steward didn't voluntarily get his leg trapped under the wheels, but your peculiar wording somehow infers it was the stewards fault

I have been outside Chelsea, West Ham and Tottenham after matches, and the amount of supporters who clamour round players cars, I am surprised this has not happened a lot more.
Also, why the hell do they still have to mention John Terry's affair, this had nothing to do with that, it is like everytime Germany was mentioned, that people said Hitler was responsible for world war 2.
