Man bailed in river body probe

20 Mar 2010

A man arrested after a young man's body was pulled from the River Thames has been bailed.

The victim, in his 20s, was discovered in Shadwell Basin, near Garnet Street, east London, on Friday morning.

A 20-year-old man was later held at his home address in east London over the find, and has been bailed until April 15 pending further inquiries, Scotland Yard said.

Officers have been investigating whether the dead man was involved in a confrontation with a group of people at about 9.30pm on Thursday.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics and a marine unit, were called to the river after several people dialled 999 to say a man had fallen in.

A Yard spokesman said the victim was on the waterside with a 17-year-old girl when the confrontation is thought to have taken place.

The girl suffered a head injury but it is not clear exactly what happened.

Witnesses told police a group of people were seen in "some kind of altercation" with the victim and the girl.

Detectives have been focusing on whether the victim suffered any injuries, and whether he fell in the water or was pushed.

He is believed to have lived in the Shadwell area. It is not known if the teenager was his girlfriend. His family have been informed.
