Mayor Boris Johnson today increased the "London living wage" - the unofficial minimum wage for the capital - by 25p to £7.85 an hour.
He announced that five new large employers have signed up to pay the wage as a minimum - Clifford Chance, Deloitte, Nomura, Prudential and Standard Chartered. They join more than 100 organisations already committed to paying the rate, which is more than £2 an hour higher than the £5.80 national minimum wage.
Many local councils, the NHS and government departments have resisted bringing in the wage. Islington, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Ealing are among those councils that have introduced it.
Mr Johnson has written to major employers in the capital outlining the business case and social benefits of implementing the wage, including the reduction of poverty. He said: "This cannot be imposed, particularly in tough economic circumstances, but it's up to all of us to argue for it."
