Sickening violence: Leon Elcock, left, and Hamza Lyzai

Couple were 'violated' by young thugs

Five days before the fatal attack, Leon Elcock and the youngest defendant subjected an elderly couple to more sickening violence.

The Old Bailey heard how the gang members had been sitting on a wall outside the home of Jushbhai and Jasumati Patel in Tooting last August.

The couple could see some of the youths had entered their garden.

But when Mrs Patel, 72, went to the door to try to move them on, the pair forced their way into the house and - watched by their friends - began attacking them.

Prosecutor Brian Altman QC, said: "Adding to the frightening ordeal that this must have been, one of the youths kicked her in the stomach, forcing her to the hallway floor. Her husband, who had followed his wife into the hallway was himself kicked to the floor by one of the two youths. Both youths then kicked and stamped on the couple." Mr Patel, 78, then called the police.

Judge Martin Stephens told the pair: "You committed a very serious assault. You violated their home and you damaged them physically and mentally."
