Baby Florence Cameron meets the media machine

Joe Murphy, Political Editor
3 Sep 2010

Florence met the media today — and fell fast asleep.

David Cameron's 10-day-old daughter was cradled in the arms of beaming mother Samantha for her first photo call in Downing Street.

Mr Cameron obliged photographers by kissing the baby three times. Asked how many nappies he had changed, he joked: “Hundreds.”

Florence, who was born early while the Camerons were on holiday in Cornwall, wore a white shawl crocheted by charity fundraiser Jane Fraser-Cross, from Sutton Coldfield, who is known as “Granny Jane”.

Mrs Cameron was wearing an orange dress, made by a local dressmaker, which she has worn before. Asked if the baby was keeping them awake, she smiled and replied: “Yes.”

Mrs Fraser-Cross, 74, said she was "absolutely thrilled" the Camerons liked her gift.

"I'm so elated. I'm absolutely thrilled because I admire David Cameron and after all the sadness they went through... I feel honoured."

Florence was born at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro last Tuesday, weighing 6lb 1oz. She was not expected until this month, but caught the family by surprise while they were on holiday.

Her middle name, Endellion, refers to the village of St Endellion on the north Cornish coast, near where the Camerons were staying.

The Camerons are also parents to Nancy, six, and Arthur Elwen, four. The couple lost their other son, Ivan, who suffered from cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy, when he died aged six last year.

Richard, youre right. Australia is well and truly out of all that nonsense. However, I wouldnt say the Northern Hemisphere is bad. I am in the Northern Hemisphere, and from where I am standing, things are pretty good. Western Europe is the problematic area. These pictures of Dave Cameron are no exception. He is no different to the other celebrity-seeking shmoozers of today's world, favoring trendy social policies over proper ones that work.

I am glad he has children, and is at least married before he had any children (unlike most of the immoral british populace) but really, is it relevent? His job is to get Britain out of the social, economic and moral mess it is in.

Britain and parts of Europe are cheaper to live than here, but the way of life there at present is so awful that it isnt worth it. Mr Cameron, your job is a hard one but I hope you do it well and use the right tools for the right job!

Juma: I couldn't care less if Florence is a lovely healthy baby or not. What's it to me? Would Cameron care if I had a lovely healthy baby? Not in the slightest! They're wheeling the kid out to appeal to the cuddly toy, silver balloons masses. Ahhh! everyone is supposed to say and forget that David Cameron is a liar who gave us a cast iron guarantee to hold a referendum on the EU (which the majority of people in this country want out of) and then, when he could hide behind the Cleggeron, conveniently, and immediately renaged on it. Don't you all know that we are slaves now? 80% of our laws are made in the fascist EU including that on immigration. Thank you Cameron. Instead of breeding more kids in an over-populated world, do the job you were paid and elected to do. Look after the interests of the people of this country.

Any truth in the rumour that Barack and Michelle are to be godparents?

Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Cameron!

That said, Mr. Cameron you are the country's Prime Minister and you have had over 6 weeks summer vacation, 2/3 weeks break at Christmas and the same a 2/3 week break at Easter. In fact you along with all MP's seem to think you are back at school taking school holidays. Do you think you could spare a little time and get on with the job of running the country and while you are at it cutting your 12 weeks leave per year to no more than 6 weeks? Paternity leave in addition to your 12 weeks leave is just taking it too far.
I am beginning the think Guy Fawkes had the correct idea!

Drooling over your baby in public doesn't make you a better or more honourable politician David. Honour your pre-election pledge. Give us a referendum on the EU!

"Well I never....that sure looks like a baby...lots of folks have them.

That one made me laugh.

Seriously - yes its good they have a baby, but it isn't front page news. It is also over the top - first there was an article that they had a baby, then there was another article about the name of the baby, now we have a third about the baby going to no.10.

If I was really cynical I would say it was almost as if the ES is going out of its way to give Cameron some good publicity.
