New depot gets 2012 athletes on the buses

Matthew Beard, Olympics Editor

Olympics chiefs want to create one of London's largest bus depots to ferry athletes between venues.

Games organisers have earmarked a site near West Ham Tube station for the temporary transport mall for 400 buses and 1,200 drivers.

They will build a 4,000 square-metre depot on the current Parcelforce site. It will be surrounded by a 2.7-metre security fence and has been rated as one of the highest risk areas in the Olympic zone because of the congregation of so many athletes.

Pending planning permission from Newham council, the depot will open in April 2012 for testing and will be dismantled after the Paralympics six months later. Games chiefs are consulting residents about their plans.

At present West Ham station is only served by 1 single deck bus route despite having a new garage next door. I bet if Ken was still Mayor some routes would have been extended to this very importent station that will one day get a DLR Servive...Well it was meant to start last summer but lazy bones Boris has done nothing to get this extension open.

As for a temporary buses wonder if London can reclaim the spare Bendy buses before they go to Malta. Some are already in service on the south coast!!

This olympic junket thing just gets more tiresome! Everyone knows that Stratford Bus Station cannot cope with its current traffic, and TfL choose to do nothing about it. The 'hub' is riven with gangs, beggars, magazine pushers and the annoying 'chuggers'which makes it a very unpleasant place to use. Little wonder its all been moved down the road by West Ham tube station. The fun bit? Given the traffic, it'll take them around 30 minutes to get from their new 'bus station' to the olympic park, and that's not during the rush hour. Oh what a joke this who thing'll be.
