I’m mortified, says Pink Floyd star’s son after swinging from Cenotaph flag

The son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour was revealed today as the student fees protester who was pictured swinging from a Union flag on the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

Charlie Gilmour, 21, issued a grovelling apology after he faced a barrage of criticism for insulting the nation's war dead. In a statement, he said he was “mortified” by his “moment of idiocy”, saying he did not realise the flag was on the Cenotaph at the time.

Police sources said he could now face arrest over his actions.

The Cambridge University history graduate, who was also in Regent Street when Charles and Camilla's car was attacked, said today: “I feel nothing but shame. My intention was not to attack or defile the Cenotaph.

"Running along with a crowd of people who had just been violently repelled by the police, I got caught up in the spirit of the moment. I did not realise that it was the Cenotaph and if I had, I certainly would not have done what I did.

“I feel additionally mortified that my moment of idiocy has distracted so much from the message yesterday's protest was trying to send out.”

The musician's son added: “Those who are commemorated by the Cenotaph died to protect the very freedoms that allow the people of Britain the right to protest and I feel deeply ashamed to have, although unintentionally and unknowingly, insulted the memory of them.

“Ignorance is the poorest of excuses but I am sincerely sorry.”

Mr Gilmour's mother the writer and journalist Polly Samson told the Standard that both she and her son were as “deeply ashamed.”

She said he genuinely did not realise the flag was attached to the Cenotaph. “He was running along with a crowd and in a mad, mad moment he grabbed the flag and swung on it.

“It is a terrible iconic image and he was honestly horrified when he discovered what he had done. He is so ashamed that he can barely speak.”

Mr Gilmour's actions sparked condemnation from the Royal British Legion. A spokesman said: “War memorials honour the memory of the British Armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice and those who defend the freedom we enjoy.”

" Another P***K on the Wall" you could say. I thought this was a girl. To spout out a prepared statement and saying he did not know it was The Cenotaph is an insult to those it commemorates and to our intelligence. Not that this stoned out twit would know anything about respect or intelligence. He should be charged with dessecration of a monument, and given the choice of either joining the army or given a custodial sentence. He should also be thrown out of Cambridge as they have failed to teach a history student what The Cenotaph looks like or why The Union flag flys from it. Well done the future looks bright in the hands of idiots like this. His parents must be so so proud.

Mortified? He should be expelled.

As for the student riots over this threatened rise in tuition fees, excuse me for not showing much sympathy. I really don’t understand why they seem so worked up about this issue. The repayments terms seem mild enough compared to any other kind of commercial loan. The majority of them must have credit cards, and we all know how expensive they are if you lose control of your debts. How many have taken out a loan to buy a car? And you get precious little sympathy from your creditors if you get in over your head either. Yet they probably commit to these liabilities with barely a murmur. Why are student fees considered to be such an outrage? I must be missing something here. As for me I have just had to fork out £5k for repairs to my vehicle which is my only source of income these days. The weather has been terrible lately and I’m suffering from a streaming cold, and I’m 62, with no hope of being able to afford to retire in the foreseeable future, and I am going to find it a struggle to pay my Income Tax, and VAT in the New Year because of this unexpected repair bill. Then I come home from work and have to watch all these students rioting in such a depraved manner – and over what exactly? As for that ‘He’ who I thought was a ‘She’ (He has very shapely legs for a lad) swinging on the Union Jack on the Cenotaph; I read that he comes from a highly privileged background and he is full of sincere regret and remorse for what he did etc., etc.: No doubt we have a celebrity here in the making. It just makes me sigh with the state of country these days. When I was his age I was a soldier. I left school at 15 and have been a wage-earner ever since in common with much of my generation. Old people used to moan and groan at me when I was a kid, saying things like, “You don’t know you’re born you kids today”, and I used to laugh at them. Now I think I’m beginning to understand how they must have felt.

It shouldn't matter what he thought he was hanging off of... it wasn't his to be wrecking, whether its the Union Jack or a Walls flag at the sweetie shop. As for the apology, remember, his mum writes the lyrics for his dad's songs, so choice words are readily at hand, though he's likely quite capable on his own. And the shame they voice for his actions is more likely that of a mother and son struggling to stem the flow of vitriol and the longstanding disgrace they are doomed to endure. His dad, always so restrained in the heat of those musical moments, is wise to stay out of this. Charlie is old enough to be stupid or smart on his own accord. And it appears he's made his choice.

His statement that he didn't realise he was swinging off the Cenotaph makes sense when you see the little interview he gives a roving BBC reporter. He's clearly off his face. Not only that, he's brandishing the leg off a shop mannequin and slurringly pronouncing that he and his chums have been 'generally trashing things'. Wonder of the police are going to be having a look at that little cinematic gem? A proper Charlie and no mistake...

Indeed protesting is something which we should value; however when a protest becomes a feral mob then issues lose support. I was quite proud over the last month to see people care enough to do something; but you also carry the responsibility of maintaining a protest and not let the agitators turn it into a riot. Its not good enough to say "I got carried away in the heat". You have to be smarter than this otherwise your cause is already lost.

A stupid young man has made a mistake - his bigger mistake was to make his apology an excuse. That image is now seared in many many people's minds - many of whom initially had sympathy for the protest but now will not. The Cenotaph is a powerful symbol and firstly desecrating but then patronising those who hold its meaning dear only adds insult to injury.

There are consequences to actions - and that means more than a PR crafted apology.

@ Belle, London,
Great society you`re hoping to grow up into (I`m assuming you`re a young`un). One where protesting goes on, whatever the cause, just to show that the protesters are alive.
Endless stream of chaos and conflict in the streets, buildings attacked, private property wrecked, but hey, shows they`re alive right?

I mentioned that I assume you`re young, that`s because you have no experience of civil conflict, but you`ve been deluded into thinking that it achieves the noble aims of protesters . . . . . wrong!!
Violent disorder in the streets never wins, it gets crushed, rightfully, because the majority of people in the country want it crushed.

No matter how worthwhile or justified the cause, once a brick is thrown, a policeman attacked, a window smashed, the argument is lost.

The recent spate of demonstrations have, as their core, the subject of further education, yet the case is being presented by mindless thugs. . . . doomed to failure

To all students guilty of violence/damage to property: if it had been kept as a peaceful protest, no one would have got hurt nor buildings vandalised, thus adding to the expense for your right to protest. Guess who foots the bill for this? Yes, the taxpayer. Do you not realise everything has a price-tag attached to it? Very little in life is for free and it's about time you pampered little bleaters accepted this. But then, you are of the 'I want it now' generation who think your right is to have anything at others' and/or taxpayers' expense.

Having students pay something for it makes it worth more. We call it having some skin in the game. If something is free then those who have it will not value it. What an absolute pillock - I sympathise with the downfall of University education funding, but actions like this will only serve to detract from the argument. A shame a few idiots ruined things for the majority of peaceful protestors. Gives the politicians something to talk about rather than the real issues.

History graduate from Cambridge and doesn't know about the Cenotaph.Like to know exactly whose history he was studying. Isn't his dad against education in general as a form of mind control.

The Cambridge University history graduate....

So much money, so obviously well spent.
He did not realize what the monument he was going by was.
An utter disgrace.

I'd be more sympathetic if "his" apology was not so obviously written by a professional publicist.

Send this piece of used Andrex out to Afganistan and let him see first hand what he has desecrated, and if you find the other moron who urinated up against a monument send them together. Hopefully ensuring that you don't bring them back in body bags, but alas nobody would probably care either way.
