Ken Livingstone under fire for earning thousands from Iranian TV role

Peter Dominiczak
20 Jan 2011

Ken Livingstone was today accused of showing “a lack of judgment” after it emerged he has been paid thousands of pounds to front a programme on Iranian state television.

He has presented seven shows on the English-language Press TV channel, three of which have been broadcast since he became Labour's London mayoral candidate in September.

The government-funded international news network was launched by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2007 and is run by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.

The broadcaster was investigated last year by Ofcom after interviewing a jailed Newsweek journalist who was allegedly under extreme duress at the time in an interrogation room.

Mr Livingstone's appearances, reviewing books on the channel, put him at odds with senior Labour figures including party leader Ed Miliband, who called last month for the release of an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning after her alleged confession to her part in her husband's murder was shown on Press TV.

Human rights campaigners condemned the channel after its report on Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. In a report on its website, Press TV said she had accompanied a film crew to her house “to recount details of the killing of her husband at the crime scene”. Activists, however, claim her apparent confession was coerced.

The criticism of Mr Livingstone follows calls for his expulsion from Labour in October, after he campaigned openly alongside Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman, who had been deselected by the party over alleged links to extremism.

Mr Livingstone first appeared on Press TV in March 2009, standing in for former Respect MP George Galloway. Previous presenters on the channel have been paid about £500 per show. Books reviewed on his

Epilogue programme include Zionist Israel And Apartheid South Africa, The Invention Of The Jewish People, and Israel And The Clash Of Civilizations: Iraq, Iran And The Plan To Remake The Middle East.

Conservative MP for Chelsea and Fulham, Greg Hands, said: “This shows a lack of judgment on the part of Ken Livingstone, to be working for Iranian state television at a time when press and other democratic freedoms in Iran have been completely destroyed by the regime there, and at a time when Londoners will want to know if he will ever return to the political mainstream.”

Alan Aziz, from the Zionist Federation UK, said it was a “disgrace” that Mr Livingstone had appeared on the channel. He added: “Press TV is the English language propaganda arm of the Iranian regime and if Livingstone aims to be the mayor of one of the most multicultural cities in the world that is populated by members of all faiths and sexualities, he should examine carefully the company that he keeps.”

A spokesman for Mr Livingstone said: “A wide range of people of different backgrounds in politics, academia and other walks of life have appeared on the channel and this is an occasional book review.”

Problem is Ken is a free agent he is not in the public employ and going by this drivel it means anyone who wants to be a politician cant do anything before they stand for election!!

I've met Ken several times. He's a thoroughly decent, considerate, hard-working man who has fought tirelessly for social justice for many years.
I think many of the people that try and sling all this petty mud at him know that deep down and simply resent him for exposing the selfishness of their politics.

He did more in each individual year of his Mayoralty than Boris has done in almost three, and indeed everything Boris has done that has served any useful purpose (bike hire scheme, Crossrail negotiations etc) has simply been a continuation of Ken's legacy.
He is neither an extremist nor a Muslim and the way the right-wing press and blogosphere attempt to discredit him with name-calling and inuendo is nothing short of childish.

If Boris wants to win in 2012, he's going to have to rely on more than personality and actually enter into a policy debate with Ken. Ken Livingstone is a skilled politician, a successful leader and a good man. Sorry to those who find that inconvenient.

Arfur Towcrate - how well you change history and utilise questionable sources to try to make your point.

Back in June members of the Zionist Federation showed up to counter-demonstrate against pro-Palestinian Arab demonstrators outside the Israeli embassy. This is understandable, especially given the anti-Jewish and violent nature of many of these protests as documented in police records and in the media.

EDL members also showed up and demonstrated. They did not coordinate with the ZF, and the ZF could not keep them from gathering as there is this thing called free speech in the UK. In fact, they were not even demonstrating in the same tight vicinity but were separate.

The ZF was not working "alongside" the EDL and it does not support the EDL in any way. It does not and will not. To insinuate otherwise is most curious as it shows your own biases. Stop reading anti-zionist websites for your ideas and you may learn something.

I don't know about Ken.I don't know about his agenda in Iran.I know I did not trust Galloway when the media portrayed him as a friend of Iraq,Iraqis and Saddam Hosein. But,one thing has become clear to me; Ms Ashtiani had authorised her husband's killing and had helped to bring about his murder.I personally have spoken to a reliable witness who was present at the police station where she was being questioned. So far as this person could hear and see,no torture or coercion was involved in questioning her.The witness could clearly hear her admitting to her share in the murder of her husband:This witness is not a police man or in any position of authority to say that he is one of them.He happened to be close by to hear what was being said.Ergo, cynicism rises in my mind when the media chooses at every opportunity to discuss Ms.Ashtiani's case as an innocent party whose human rights' are being eroded.Of course,we are told that she will not be stoned .-and stoning has never been in the Iranian culture: We have not many examples of this practice in Iran. But the media is mind set upon pushing the stoning matter. They never say whether Ashtiani is a criminal or not? Therefore,I am inclined to conclude that the media could be pursuing a political agenda in Iran and are using Ashtiani,a criminal, for their own sinister purposes in Iran.

I can hear Livingstone's excuses now. He will claim that his employ at Press TV has no bearing on his ability to be London Mayor. He used this form of defence in support of Boris Johnson following one of Boris' indiscredtions. Some may say he has a point, but how can he be mayor of a City that is known as the gay capital of the World yet work for a channel that is run and funded by a regime that puts homosexuals to death in a most barbaric way. Over to you UNCLE Ken ! It's Ed Miliband I feel sorry for. He's stuck with this man in 2012. Plus Mr Ed's PPS Chuka Umunna is part of the 'I'm backing Ken' campaign. Over to you Ed ! ENJOY !

@ Stephen Rothbart, don't you dare tick me off about "poor judgement" for my snide remarks about the Zionist Federation UK.

Last June some of its members demonstrated alongside - yep, you read that right - alongside members of the English Defence League, united against Palestinian supporters holding a demo outside the Israeli embassy in London.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, and the ZF need to get their own house in order before criticising Ken Livingstone.

Livingstone has always been an extremist and this just shows his true colours. Hopefully London voters will remember this at the next Mayoral election.

He had several very well paid 'advisors' when he was Mayor who were members of the extreme Trotskyist group 'Socialist Action'. He made deals with Socialist dictators and shook hands with preachers of hate while they were in the UK.

I also find it ridiculous that there's a statement from a UK Zionist organisation who have been accused of siding with the EDL against Muslims. And they talk about religious tolerance is Israel? Do they mean the West Bank and Gaza?

The best thing we can do to Iran is let them have Livingstone on a permanent basis. After he screws up their country he can move on to Cuba and Venezuela.

Possibly a shrewd calculation from Ken Livingston. He's very unpopular with London's Jews - he speaks up for the plight of Palestinians. He knows he lost the Jewish vote long ago. So could possibly offset this by gaining muslim votes.

He likes dictators and if he had his way he would be one himself. Nice one Steve!Tom of Cambridge, you and I should meet. I am right wing and Jewish so I am not really a great fan of Hitler or his Nazis. And your meeting me will be a great new experience for you.

Also, may we please remember what Hitler's party actually was originally called: The National Socialist German Workers Party. So although the left likes to label Nazism as a Right wing party, it was in fact founded on the backs of the workers and what would now be considered Socialists, not German aristocracy. They joined in later when they saw which way the wind was blowing, just like happened during the French Revolution.

Being someone who belives in personal responsibility and capitalism does not mean you are a fascist.

Anyway give me a call when you are next in Prague. I will show you what happens when the Left and Stalinists take over a country and what happens when they are all thrown out by the people. Just like Ken was.
