Puppy with broken legs crawls home after surviving tornado
Mark Prigg, Science and Technology Editor27 May 2011
A puppy crawled home with two broken legs after being thrown high into the air by a tornado that ripped through Alabama.
Mason, a terrier mix, was feared dead after the storm but was found two weeks later by his owners in the wreckage of their home.
"This is probably the most dramatic we've seen as far as an injury in an animal that's survived this long," said Phil Doster at Birmingham Jefferson County Animal Control shelter, who is caring for Mason following surgery. The shelter has dealt with hundreds of pets hurt by the storms.
"For an animal just to show up on someone's porch after this time was pretty remarkable, especially with the condition he's in."
Mason has become a minor celebrity, and has a Facebook page with more than 1,200 friends.

It was on the news last evening that the puppy will return to his owners in about a month, giving them time to rebuild and him time to recover.

Didn't Andy Rooney say something to the effect that most dogs are nicer people than most of the people we know? It is difficult to be as good a human as your dog thinks you are. This pup's determination to find his family shows some devotion.

Maybe some people here do not understand that these tornados have FLATTENED entire towns, that neighborhoods once thriving with housing and cars and kids on bicycles are GONE, just leftover pieces of wood and debris, worse than bombing, and as I also have a dog I love dearly, she is a lovely companion animal, if I were so deprived that I had nowhere to live, no automobile, and no source of monetary support, I might then also be forced to relinquish my dog for the dog's sake. She also needs shelter and care and food, but some people in these storm areas have NOTHING. Mason had expensive surgery and needs a place to recover and long-term care. If his owners cannot provide those necessities, they are being gracious if they offer him to someone else who can care for him. If they can be reunited with him successfully, more power to them.

While my heart goes out to those who lost everything in the tornado, I just could not imagine giving my pet up. If I were hungry and homeless, I'd share every bit of food and shelter I could get with the animals. I wish that people would understand that animals are no less important than human beings. I'm so saddened that Kelly from Leesburg, VA considers pets a luxury. Really??? They are just as much a part of the family as the human beings are!!! Best wishes to Mason

While I do understand people being upset his owners could give him up I can also understand why they might. Have you people looked at the pictures of devestation from these tornados? People literally have no homes, they have no vehicles and quite likely many have no jobs. They are having to rely on the kindness of others and I think we all know thats not always so kind. I can imagine a family living at a shelter or being put up in a hotel or someones home being told they can't have their animal. Especially an animal that will need lots of care. I would imagine it's quite a lot like when people give babies up for adoption, they do it because they love them and know they can't provide for them. I hope when they get back on their feet they can be reunited with their dog.

@ Michelle, Tacoma, WA,
I could care less about my house and it's belongings as long as my pets survived along with me.
A house and it's belongings can be replaced.

To Joe in Shreveport USA,
I do appreciate the clarification, but what I'm really trying to find out is whether the pup will rejoin his family once he recovers and their home is repaired.

Hello? These people have LOST EVERYTHING IN A TORNADO INCLUDING THEIR HOME! How can they care for an animal when they don't even have a place to live themselves?? What do you expect them to do with him? Why is it a bad thing they want him to have a home when they are in no position to provide him with one right now?

Poor thing. He must have been winded, even though he only had two feet left to go.
Even if his prior family can't support him anymore, I'm sure there are many who would open their homes to a free Mason.

Reminds me of a Russian poem from World War II:
Wait for me, and I'll come back!
Wait with all you've got!
Wait, when dreary yellow rains
Tell you, you should not.
Wait when snow is falling fast,
Wait when summer's hot,
Wait when yesterdays are past,
Others are forgot.
Wait, when from that far-off place,
Letters don't arrive.
Wait, when those with whom you wait
Doubt if I'm alive.
Wait for me, and I'll come back!
Wait in patience yet
When they tell you off by heart
That you should forget.
Even when my dearest ones
Say that I am lost,
Even when my friends give up,
Sit and count the cost,
Drink a glass of bitter wine
To the fallen friend -
Wait! And do not drink with them!
Wait until the end!
Wait for me and I'll come back,
Dodging every fate!
"What a bit of luck!" they'll say,
Those that would not wait.
They will never understand
How amidst the strife,
By your waiting for me, dear,
You had saved my life.
Only you and I will know
How you got me through.
Simply - you knew how to wait -
No one else but you.

Dear Pete and Repeat,
I think what John Kennewick from WA is really trying to say is this:
"It's my understanding the pup will rejoin his family, once he recovers and their home is repaired."
No need to thank me. I'm happy to provide the clarification.

Taking care of one, small dog isn't that difficult. I guess it's easy for me to say that after having one for 11 years, and now we are a household with two rottweilers. After everything he went through to get back to that family, you would think it would inspire them to do whatever it takes to get back on their feet... including keeping their family pet. I hope this dog finds a better family.

I completely understand his family's decision, if what Jenn from Raleigh said is true. If the family cannot care for the dog or cannot afford to do so, the right thing to do is give him up. Mason is undoubtably loved, but when it comes down to it he's still a dog, and the family needs to provide for their children and the human beings first. Pets are a luxury and in matters of survival and rebuilding after devastation, luxuries take a backseat to needs.

If that is how his family feels about him, he is better off with another family, they don't deserve him. Animals are not disposable, why can't people understand that? If you don't intend to take care of an animal family member DON'T get one!!!

How a family can give him up after all he did is beyond me. I'd rather give all my help to him, and completely forget the family. Yes, it's a horrible situation, but what horrible people to exclude him from their family. Dogs really do have better hearts than any human.

"While my heart goes out to this family for their loss, I just dont see how after everything Mason did to get back home, they could give him up. I cant believe that a friend or family member couldnt take him while the owners got back on their fee. Poor Mason!!- Jenn, Raleigh, NC, 27/05/2011 16:17"
Totally agree Jenn.I was homeless (through a series of events no fault of my own) a decade or so ago and luckily had a car to sleep in but did not think of leaving my beloved loyal Staff cross for one moment. They say they dogs are mans best friend and this is true as at the time he seemed like my only friend in the world. I also had to off load my lovely cat to various people where he was nearly lost 3 times but managed to eventually get a roof over my head and got him back and he is now around 22yoa can you believe.

I read another article about Mason that was a little more in-depth. It was stated that the owners ended up turning him over to the animal hospital because they could no longer care for him due to everything they lost in the tornado. While my heart goes out to this family for their loss, I just dont see how after everything Mason did to get back home, they could give him up.
