Scotland Yard has established a new team to examine claims that private investigators illegally targeted emails and computer files of celebrities and politicians.

The creation of the six-man unit, called Operation Tuleta, piles further pressure on the News of the World which is already at the centre of an inquiry into allegations of phone hacking.

The latest operation is examining claims that private investigator Jonathan Rees hacked personal computers and obtained bank details from public figures. At least two media groups are said to have been involved with him.

Today it emerged that former home secretary Jack Straw and Lord Mandelson have contacted Scotland Yard after the fresh allegations. Operation Tuleta is considering if there are grounds for a new investigation.
