Man shot three times in attack outside club

A man was fighting for his life today after being shot at least three times outside a Clapham nightclub.

The victim, in his twenties, was attacked by a gang of youths as he stood with his girlfriend in the busy High Street.

Paramedics and an air ambulance attended the victim, who is thought to be Portuguese, outside the HedKandi club at about 9.40pm yesterday.

The gang was seen sprinting from the scene and it is not yet known whether the victim was the intended target.

Steve Pigott, who runs a football team, rushed to help the injured man as he cycled to a friend's 30th birthday party after training.

Mr Pigott, 28, who works for a design company, told how he used the team's training bibs to help staunch the flow of blood.

He said: "There was a lot of blood everywhere. I could see he was in a lot of pain and his girlfriend was screaming uncontrollably.

"They were using toilet tissue to try to stop the blood but it was pretty useless so I handed out a few of our training bibs. He was on his knees, crumpled up, and had been shot under his arm. He was awake, but soon fell unconscious."

Mr Pigott, who has had first aid training, said the team's medical kit had been taken home by another player. "Although I've had first aid training, it doesn't include gunshot wounds. I kept trying to talk to him and reassure him until the ambulance got there. But he was in a very bad way."

A section of Clapham High Street was still sealed off today as detectives continued their investigation.

The shooting took place in front of numerous onlookers, many of whom were later seen giving statements to detectives. A bullet hole could be seen in the window of a nearby cycle shop.

One witness, Jason Keen, wrote on Twitter: "Just saw someone get shot in Clapham High Street right in front of me. Never run so fast in my life!"
Another resident, Polly Abbott, wrote: "Was literally on the other side of the road and saw someone get shot in Clapham... just awful and don't want to live there anymore. Was on a bus and the driver kept on going. Loads of people were running to help."

Scotland Yard said no one had yet been arrested and that its Trident unit, which investigates gun crime in the black community, had been informed.
