David Miliband ‘in plot to oust Brown’ claims Lord Mandelson
Paul Waugh, Deputy Political Editor13 Jul 2010
David Miliband plotted — with Tony Blair's approval — to replace Gordon Brown as Labour leader, Lord Mandelson's memoirs claimed today.
In the second instalment of his book The Third Man, the former Business Secretary gave his strongest hint yet that Mr Miliband came close to moving against the former Prime Minister.
The peer said he and Mr Miliband had a shared “alarm at the drift and decline” that dogged Mr Brown in 2008. He revealed he received a text from Mr Miliband at the height of the speculation on a possible challenger.
It read: “Large mountain ahead. Orienteering/climbing/planning skills much needed.” The peer replied: “Guides, sherpas available.”
Friends of Mr Miliband insisted today he was never part of a plot.
