David Miliband woos women in Labour leadership battle
Paul Waugh, Deputy Political Editor22 Jul 2010
David Miliband made a direct pitch for the women's vote today in his Labour leadership manifesto.
He backed all-female shortlists for candidates in 50 of the party's 100 target seats and said women should form a third of its shadow ministers.
The shadow foreign secretary also wants the Commons to adopt “9-to-5” hours and job-shares for Cabinet ministers. Women MPs complain
that current Commons hours make childcare difficult to arrange.
Reform would require cross-party agreement but Mr Miliband today said MPs “miss nights with their families” and present hours “set a poor precedent for a work-life balance”.
He also pledged more funds for local parties which performed best on gender equality.
