River Thames

The River Thames is a major river flowing through Southern England, through many cities, towns and villages including Oxford, Reading, Windsor and London (where it is an iconic part of the city). The Thames is the longest river in England (346km / 215miles) and the second longest in the entire UK after the River Severn. The Thames’ source is in Thames Head in Gloucester (although it is argued that Seven Springs is also a Thames source), and its mouth is the Thames Estuary leading into the North Sea. In medieval times the river was the southern boundary of London, with Southwark (a separate town) on the other bank.

  • Facts
  • The River Thames is fed by over 20 tributaries and since it has both freshwater and saltwater sections, it supports a wide variety of wildlife
  • The Thames has over 80 islands ranging from small, wooded islets, to large marshlands such as the Isle of Sheppey in the Thames Estuary
  • The river is policed by five different police forces, each responsible for their own stretch of river. These include the Thames Division of London’s Metropolitan Police, Surrey Police, Thames Valley Police, Essex Police and Kent police.
  • Between the 15th and 19th centuries, the river would commonly freeze over in winter. In 1536, King Henry VIII travelled from central London to Greenwich by sleigh across the frozen river. The first celebrated ‘frost fair’ took place in 1608.
