Arpad ‘Arki’ Busson is a wealthy London-based hedge fund manager, founding the hedge fund EIM in 1992 which was highly successful and has offices in Geneva, Zurich, London, New York, Paris, Gibraltar, Singapore, Monaco, Amsterdam and Luxembourg. In 2008, it was announced that EIM was a victim of Bernard Madoff's ponzi scheme, with around $230million under the management of Madoff's company. Busson founded (and is Chairman of the Board of Directors on) ARK (Absolute Return for Kids), a charity which raises money for children victims of poverty, disease and abuse all over the world. Busson once wooed the late Farrah Fawcett, before fathering two children in his long-term relationship with supermodel Elle Macpherson before they split in 2005. In 2008, it was announced that Busson had become engaged to Hollywood actress Uma Thurman.

London's hedge fund community may have had a torrid time last year but at least its favoured charity, Arki Busson's ARK (or absolute return for kids), has shown the way in moneymaking. In the year to August 2008, its income rose from £32.7 million to £40.2 million. Furthermore, hedge fund turmoil is not expected to affect the levels of pledges. ARK acknowledges that "the level of outstanding donor pledges is considered to be one of the charity's key risks" but that all funding pledges "due for payment have been received to date." So hats off to the generous hedgies and let's hope that spirit continues.... more
