Sunderland AFC

Sunderland AFC is an English professional football team, founded in 1879 as Sunderland and District teachers, before becoming known simply as Sunderland in 1880. The club is based in Tyne and Wear and is known as ‘The Black Cats,’ a nickname given due to the importance of the black cat in Sunderland folklore. The club play at the Stadium of Light, a ground considered to be one of the best in the country. Holding 49,000 people, the stadium was opened in 1997 and has since been host to several international games as well as league games.
