Fernando Torres began his career at
Atletico Madrid where he made his debut in 2001. At
Athletico he scored 74 goals in 174 appearances in the Spanish First Division and earned the nickname El Nino (The Kid) due to his young age. His importance to
Athletico Madrid was shown when he was named captain at the age of 21. He moved to Liverpool in 2007 for a club record transfer of approximately £26.5 million. In his first season at Liverpool he scored 29 goals in all competitions. In January 2011 moved to Chelsea for a British record transfer fee of £50m.
