Matthew Upson is an English professional footballer, born in 1979, who currently plays for West Ham United. The centre back began his career at Luton but was bought by Arsenal for £2 million after just two senior games. Two years after joining Arsenal he suffered a cruciate ligament injury and when he returned a year later he was unable to force his way back into the team. He joined Nottingham Forest on loan but was injured after the first game. He then went on loan to Crystal Palace for 7 games before returning to Arsenal to play 14 Premier League games until he broke his leg. After a brief loan spell at Reading he joined Birmingham in January 2003. He joined West Ham in 2007 after Birmingham had been relegated in 2006. At the Hammers he has become a first team regular and used this form to push his way into the England squad, mainly as third choice centre back.
