Laura Robson is a British tennis player. Born in January 1994 in Australia, Robson moved to the UK at an early age. She first appeared on the tennis scene when in 2007 she played in the International Tennis Federation junior tour, then the next year won the Wimbledon Junior Girls’ Championship at the age of 14, launching her into the public eye. In 2009, Robson managed to get to the final of the Australian Open Junior Girls Championships, but lost to Ksenia Pervak in straight sets. In February 2009, Robson was ranked second on the ITF Junior Girls rankings, with a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) ranking of 482nd (June ’09). In June 2009, Robson received a wildcard to play in the Ladies Singles of the Championships at Wimbledon, but was defeated in the first round after winning the first set against Daniela Hantuchova.

Part of what made her 2008 Wimbledon victory such a media sensation, (apart from being the first British player to win the event since 1984), was the fact that not only did she enter the event unseeded, but she was also the youngest player in the tournament.

After Robson’s early defeat in the 2009 Olympics, her mother Kathy Robson, blamed the loss on exam stress, as Laura had taken her GCSE exams ten days earlier, a year earlier than most girls of Robson’s age.
