Phil Brown’s career consisted of playing lower league football as a right back. His management career began with a series of assistant manager and coaching jobs at Blackpool and /standard-home/related-36434-articles-reviews/Bolton+Wanderers+FC/related.do. Brown had a brief period as caretaker manager at /standard-home/related-36434-articles-reviews/Bolton+Wanderers+FC/related.do in 1999 before Sam Allardyce took charge and Brown stayed with him as his assistant until 2005 guiding the team into the Premier League in the process. After a 7-month period at Derby he was sacked and moved to Hull City as first team coach in October 2006 under Phil Parkinson. Brown was then appointed as manager at the start of 2007 and avoided relegation with the Tigers. The following season Brown led Hull to the play-offs were they beat Bristol City
1-0 to secure a first ever promotion to the Premier League. The following season Hull managed to stay in the top flight despite struggling for form in the second half of the season.
