The competition played between Europe and the United States first took place in 1927 and is named after Englishman Samuel Ryder, a former seed merchant, who donated the trophy. The cup features a format of four fourball and four foursomes matches on each of the opening two days and 12 singles on the final day. In 2008, the event was won by the United States team, led by captain Paul Azinger. Their 16.5- 11.5 win ended a run of three successive victories by Europe. Nick Faldo holds the all-time record for most individual points by a European with 25 while Billy Casper tops the American list with 23.5. Ryder Cup rules state that the defending champions need to reach 14 points in order to claim the trophy while the opposing side must claim 14.5 to win outright.
