The great Evening Standard Christmas Charity Auction

The Evening Standard Christmas charity auction has raised more than £200,000 after frenzied bidding pushed the total to record levels.

The final sum raised at the close of the auction stands at an astonishing £206,617.86.

Despite the credit crunch, Evening Standard readers raised £20,000 more for charity than in last year's appeal — a remarkable achievement in the current economic climate.

The money will go to Greenhouse, which supports some of London's most disadvantaged children through sports and performing arts programmes.

Readers bid thousands of pounds for such treats as a New York shopping trip with model Kate Moss and retail tycoon Sir Philip Green.
