The X Factor's Brenda Edwards has signed up for the role of Mama Morton.

The X Factor's Brenda Edwards has signed up for the role of Mama Morton in the stage production of Chicago

The soul diva, who reached the semi-finals of the ITV1 show, joins previously-announced Bonnie Langford as Roxie Hart.

The 36-year-old mother of two, from London, follows in the footsteps of Gaby Roslin and Alison Moyet as the prison matron.

Edwards makes her West End stage debut in the London production of the smash hit musical, with Anna-Faye Wright as Velma Kelly and Italian stage and screen star Luca Barbareschi as Billy Flynn.

Wright played murderess Kelly on Broadway, while Barbareschi played Chicago lawyer Flynn in the Italian tour of Chicago.

The musical closes at the Adelphi Theatre on April 22 before reopening on April 28 at the Cambridge Theatre, the home of the show when the first production opened there in 1979.

Chicago became the longest-running production to play at the Adelphi Theatre in October last year.
