Jerry Hall and Bill Wyman will announce who has won Best Play

Winners to be named at London theatre awards

Tom Teodorczuk, Evening Standard
27 Nov 2006

The wait is almost over. Today we will discover who has triumphed in the 52nd Evening Standard Theatre Awards at the Savoy Hotel.

Will Rock'n'Roll, The Seafarer or Frost/Nixon be victorious when Jerry Hall and Bill Wyman announce who has won Best Play?

And will Spamalot charge away with the Best Musical prize, seeing off Caroline, Or Change, Evita and Sunday In The Park With George?

The acting stakes are especially strong this year. Kathleen Turner (Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf ?), Frances O'Connor (Tom And Viv) and Sinead Cusack ( Rock 'n'Roll) are competing for best actress. Michael Sheen will reveal who has ended up victorious.

Sheen himself is in the running for best actor for his portrayal of David Frost in Frost/Nixon, the winner to be disclosed by Kristin Scott Thomas.

But he faces stiff competition from Kevin Spacey for A Moon For The Misbegotten, Rufus Sewell for Rock'n'Roll and Bill Irwin in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ? Other categories to watch out for include the Sydney Edwards best director award.

This is being contended by Anthony Page for Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf ?, Marianne Elliott for Pillars Of The Community or Michael Grandage for Frost/Nixon, The Wild Duck and Evita.

The Milton Shulman award for outstanding newcomer is between actors Chris New and Andrew Garfield, Evita actress Elena Roger and innovative theatre group Punchdrunk.

The Charles Wintour award for most promising playwright comes with £30,000 donated jointly by Lord Rothermere, chairman of the Daily Mail and General Trust, publisher of the Evening Standard, and American Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Richard Wilson will present the special award and Culture Minister David Lammy will disclose who has won the editor's award. Ned Sherrin will be master of ceremonies and the event is hosted by Lady Rothermere.

Guests at theatreland's most prestigious awards will include Damien Lewis, Kim Cattrall, Tim Curry, Patrick Stewart, Dominic West, Jeremy Irons and Stephen Daldry. Also present will be Dame Joan Plowright, Iain Glen, Jane Asher, Juliet Stevenson, Sally Greene, Brian Cox, Rufus Norris, Alan Cumming, Alice Eve, Sir John Mortimer, Douglas Hodge, Lesley Manville, Sir Donald Sinden, Nicholas Wright, Michael Frayn, Jude Kelly and Jodhi May.
