US twin for new London dance company

One of the world's leading classical choreographers is setting up a dance company with bases in London and New York.

Christopher Wheeldon, 33, who quit as resident choreographer at New York City Ballet in November, said he was inspired by Diaghilev, who caused an artistic sensation in 1909 with the Ballets Russes.

The new company, Morphoses, will have a permanent home at Sadler's Wells and in New York.

The permanent company will be launched next year but an inaugural season is planned for this year with some of the best dancers in the world. Wheeldon said: "This is a huge gamble."
