Critic's choice: top comedy shows

Bruce Dessau

This weekend's comedy highlights include Jo Brand, Stewart Lee and Mark Thomas raising money in aid of democracy for Burma, and DJ Danny nailing the ludicrous jargon of dance music.

Deirdre O'Kane
Hen & Chickens, N1
Irish exiles should instantly know this talented tousle-haired performer who is known back home for both her sharp character comedy and her honest, observational stand-up. O'Kane has recently relocated to London, so after these low-key gigs expect to see more of her on the circuit and the box. (020 7704 2201). Tonight, 9.30pm. Until Sat 24 March. along, too. (0870 429 6883). Thursday, 8pm. Until Sat 24 March.

DJ Danny
Soho Theatre, W1
A London run for the master of the wheels of steel, DJ Danny. Or maybe that should be "schoolmaster" of the wheels of steel, as when not mashing up some phat beats Danny is really a mild-mannered teacher. Great character comedy from Dan Robins, nailing the ludicrous jargon of dance music and getting the audience to sing along too. (0870 429 6883). Thursday, 8pm. Until Sat 24 March.

Pat Condell
Etcetera Theatre, NW1
Your last chances to catch Faith, Hope & Sanity, the witty, stinging diatribe against all organised religions from this stalwart stand-up turned-playwright-turned stand-up-again. You name the credo, Condell condemns it: "Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying religion doesn't have its uses. Personally I turn to it whenever I want my intelligence insulted." (020 7482 4857). Thursday, 7.30pm. Until Sun 25 March.

Earl Okin/Dave Fulton
Red Rose Club, N7
One of the best established clubs in the capital, the Red Rose boasts a fine mixed bag this Saturday. Earl Okin is a unique veteran speciality act, who plays pop classics on his imaginary trumpet and even toured with Paul McCartney in the Seventies. Support comes from astute US satirist Dave Fulton, laconic Scot Stephen Carlin and unstintingly amusing Andre Vincent. (07963 618333). Sat 24 March, 8pm.

Stand Up For Burma
Shaftesbury Theatre
It's a busy weekend for Jo Brand. As well as doing a benefit at my daughter's school in Dulwich on Friday (The Charter School, but it has been sold out for ages) and playing the organ for BBC1's Play It Again, she headlines this fundraiser in aid of democracy for Burma. Brand is supported by an exemplary bill including Stewart Lee, Mark Thomas, Paul Sinha and many more, while C4 news legend Jon Snow hosts. (020 7379 5399). Sun 25 March, 7pm.
