A big night in Manhattan for the Tate

9 May 2007

The Tate has held its most high-profile fundraising event outside Britain with a dinner in Manhattan.

The guest list included Calvin Klein, Queen Noor of Jordan and Carlos Slim Helú - the world's second richest man - and the event, which cost £25,000 a table, is thought to have raised over £750,000 for the Tate's four galleries - Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives.

Luminaries of the North American art scene including Ellsworth Kelly and Bruce Nauman attended the dinner of ragout of morels and asparagus tips followed by poussin.

The Tate also received six gifts from American donors, including Bird In Hand by Ellen Gallagher, Red White by Ellsworth Kelly and United States by Susan Rothenberg.

Sir Nicholas Serota, the Tate's director, said he hoped to raise the Tate's profile, adding, "that doesn't mean simply going and planting British flags... we are looking for partnerships".

Well, I hope Sir Nicholas Serota finds some discriminating and erudite partnerships. The Tate Modern collection needs them.
