Scarlett O'Hara: Trevor Nunn has been working on a version of the Gone With The Wind story

Trevor Nunn is to direct a stage adaptation of the classic novel and movie Gone With The Wind.

Nunn has been working on amusical version of the story of Scarlett O'Hara during the American Civil War with US producer Aldo Scrofani for more than three years. It is set to open at the New London Theatre in April next year.

Nunn said today: "Having now worked on adapting two vast novels for the stage, Nicholas Nickleby and Les Misérables, I am drawn to the challenge of telling Margaret Mitchell's epic story through words, music and the imaginative resources of the theatre."

The story, set in 1860s Atlanta, Georgia, follows Scarlett from her life on a plantation to the turmoil of the Civil War and a stormy relationship with Rhett Butler. The 1939 film, starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, became the biggest box office hit of its age and won eight out of 13 Oscar nominations.

Nunn has been working on the new show with sociologist Margaret Martin.

Nobody has yet been cast but booking will open in September.
