Park dates for Romeo and Juliet van tour
Louise Jury, Evening Standard28 Aug 2007
The Globe's first national tour since plague closed London theatres 400 years ago is to end with extra dates in the capital.
The production of Romeo and Juliet, which unfolds - props and all - out of a van, will be presented in Dulwich Park from Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 September.
It has been seen across the country in the past 11 weeks. The company has had to put up with downpours disrupting performances at venues such as Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, and Williamson Park, Lancaster, during the tour. Such venues were used by the King's Men players in the 17th century.
But not one show has been cancelled and the production has attracted healthy audiences, which prompted the Globe to add the extra London dates. The final night will be at Lord's on Sunday 2 September.
Caroline Pidgeon, of Southwark council, said the borough was delighted to be playing host. "The park is famous for being a place with something for everyone - we're thrilled to be adding live Shakespeare."

The performance I saw was not helped by the venue - flat area near the cafe where the performers' voices were carried away. Some of the audience couldn't make the transition from comedy to tragedy and laughed in the wrong parts - the Nurse doubling as Friar Lawrence the main reason for that. Juliet popping up from the van's sunroof and Romeo scrambling over the roofrack is something I won't forget in a hurry.

Absolutely brilliant. Energetic, funny and emotional all at once. We were lucky enough to see this at Hopetoun House, Edinburgh on a beautiful evening but would have put up with the rain to see this! Don't miss it.
