It began as a short Noël Coward play and was turned into one of the biggest movie romances of all time.

Now Brief Encounter has come full circle as a theatrical version by the Kneehigh Theatre Company opens at Haymarket's Cineworld.

David Pugh, the producer, said: "Emma Rice, the artistic director, said, 'Why don't we do Brief Encounter in the cinema where it was premiered?'" Research showed this no longer existed but the current Cinema On The Haymarket is nearby.

In the 1945 film, Celia Johnson played Laura and Trevor Howard was Alec. The pair fall in love after meeting at a railway station.

The Cineworld audience will find themselves transported back to the Forties with usherettes dressed in clothes of the period.
