Daniel Radcliffe: loved by threatre crowds

Daniel Radcliffe is a West End hit, says the theatre-going public. The Harry Potter star has been named best newcomer in the whatsonstage.com 2008 Theatregoers' Choice Awards.

Radcliffe, 18, made his stage debut in the revival of Peter Shaffer's Equus, which scooped three awards, four less than the musical Hairspray's record haul.

He is one of a number of stars to have won public support against the judgment of critics. Maggie Smith was named best actress for her critically panned appearance in The Lady From Dubuque.

There were some points of agreement, though, between the 25,000 public voters and the experts. Ian McKellen was voted best actor for his Royal Shakespeare Company King Lear.
