Don’t mind the age gap, says cougar Kim Cattrall

Playing Sex And The City's sexually voracious Samantha, Kim Cattrall was often pursuing younger men.

Now, the 53-year-old is back on the London stage where her love interest is played by Matthew Macfadyen, 18 years her junior.

Ex and the city: Matthew Macfadyen and Kim Cattrall play divorcées

Days after finishing the second film of the hit TV show, Cattrall is rehearsing for Noël Coward's comedy of manners Private Lives, where the stars play divorced couple Amanda and Elyot, who meet again while honeymooning with new spouses.

Cattrall insists that the age gap between her and former Spooks star Macfadyen, 35, is of no consequence. Asked if it was an issue, she said: “No, not at all. He's so gorgeous and adorable. At a certain age, people merge, don't they?

“I don't think in those terms any more. Maybe I've lived longer and done more things, but I don't see a difference on stage. Some of the lines might have a different significance because of my age, but that adds richness.”

Stars such as Madonna, 51, who is dating a 23-year-old model, and Sam Taylor-Wood, 42, who is engaged to 19-year-old actor Aaron Johnson, have been dubbed “cougars” — older women who opt for younger men.

Liverpool-born Cattrall, who has been married three times, admitted she would bring her personal experience to the comedy.

“Things happen and you're trying to be brave and forget about the one that got away or the one that breaks your heart,” she added.

Private Lives, directed by Sir Richard Eyre, runs at the Vaudeville for 10 weeks from 24 February. Sex And The City 2 is released in May.

Matthew Macfadyen is such a talented and versatile actor. He has proven himself time and time again. He has an old world romantic air about him. Kim is beautiful and I have been a fan of hers ever since she starred in Mannequin. I think they will be terrific together! My only issue is that I do not have the opportunity to see them in this production.

MM is 35 going on 53. He was born post-pubescent. KC has never and will never be grown up. So, no, age is not a factor in this production.

I can't wait to see the two of them together. I will fly over from Holland to see them on stage in Bath. Matthew Macfadyen is a great actor, he can play anything. I do not think the age difference will be a problem.

They look sensational together! He is the perfect male lead; and she is so beautiful and timeless. I feel this will be an incredible production.

Matthew Macfadyen is able to play a large age range and Kim Cattrall still looks lovely enough to play a younger woman. They look fabulous.
