Charles Ross: One-Man Star Wars Trilogy
Force laughter: Canadian Charles Ross

By Bruce Dessau
7 Nov 2006

Clean-cut Canadian Charles Ross mentions mid-gig that he has done his condensed version of the original Star Wars trilogy more than 1,000 times and it shows. In a good and bad way.

On the one hand, Ross can clearly switch from Luke Skywalker's irritating boyishness to Darth Vader's asthmatic evil in his sleep. On the other, it occasionally looks as if he is performing in his sleep.

While there is no doubting the energy Ross frequently puts into his skilful swaps of mood and role, there is a sense that he is also a Jedi master of the Pavlovian response.

With no props he does a comical wide-mouthed Jabba The Hutt, while a swirl of his palms evokes Princess Leia's headphone hairdo. Both prompt instant, easy laughter, as does a mean aside about Mark Hammill's career-dip.

But it would be churlish to say that this compact hour is disappointing. It does exactly what it says on the tin, offering a whistlestop tour of major plot points and getting the balance between affectionate and irreverent right. Anyone with a passing acquaintance with Chewbacca will smile and the in-jokes.will have the faithful hoisting their light sabres in appreciation.

Until 11 November. Information: 0870 890 1104.
