Rambling down mean Street

Janet Street-Porter: born to ramble
Janet Street-Porter: born to ramble

By Bruce Dessau
6 Dec 2006

It is no surprise to discover that Janet Street-Porter was once President of the Ramblers' Association.

In her entertainingly chaotic, self-indulgent autobiographical show at this swish temporary Brick Lane venue, she spends most of her time on stage rambling and ranting simultaneously.

One minute her mother is on the receiving end, the next it is Ant and Dec, the next it is sweet Felicity Kendal. If she is not putting her Versace biker boot into Gordon Ramsay's haircut she is putting it into MP Diane Abbott for a reason too libellous to print.

Whichever tangent she heads down, scandalous gossip follows. This is not so much a monologue as a monumental dirt-dishing bitchfest.

S-P believes that she triumphs even when she loses. After being evicted from I'm A Celebrity, she recalls how everyone wanted to know what shampoo she used.

In the end Street-Porter comes across as a witty woman with formidable front but no compassion. This would be reprehensible if it did not provide her show with its most acidic line.

Having just trained as a midwife for reality TV she has a typically forthright take on childbirth: "A sink plunger could cut out a a lot of corners."
