Kitchen W8
Too long and drawn out but very entertaining with excellent special effects
This is a peculiar play and does not work for me. Some of it is very funny but there are real flaws
Alex has a strong powerful voice and was faultless, she is far better now than she was on the X-Factor

John Mortimer has returned to Islington to share his musings on life, love and the law
Now here's a jolly evening for those in search of some old-school English charm. Eighty-three-year-old Sir John Mortimer, the distinguished barrister turned novelist and playwright, has returned to Islington to share his musings on life, love and the law.
Aided by a rotating cast of two actresses - Joanna David and Celia Imrie are among those billed to appear - and a pianist, Sir John positions his wheelchair in its rightful place centre stage and starts to talk.
Not for him Rumpole's stentorian bark, but a soft delivery that unfortunately seems to encourage coughers. Nevertheless, his dry anecdotes - "I was educated on the proceeds of adultery" he comments of his eminent divorce barrister father - win through.
This amiable Miscellany could do with more such recollections, especially those that haven't already surfaced in the autobiographical play A Voyage Round My Father, and less of the society of Mortimer's favourite dead poets.
Betjeman, Browning, Byron et al get lengthy readings from the actresses - I caught Rohan McCullough and the excellent Lily Bevan - but it's Bailey, Rumpole thereof that the show's target audience surely come for. She Who Must Be Obeyed would expect nothing less.
