Horrific breakdown is not as funny this time

Loudmouth: Aussie Brendon Burns gets good material from his time in rehab
Loudmouth: Aussie Brendon Burns gets good material from his time in rehab

By Bruce Dessau

"If Kate Moss turned up we would have chopped her up and snorted her." Brendon Burns certainly gets good material out of his spell in The Priory, but Sober Not Clean, concerning his return to sanity after a horrific breakdown, is not all a barrel of laughs.

This is partly because some of it is deadly serious, partly because some of the funny parts were not that funny on a chilly London night that never quite clicked. By contrast, the Edinburgh Fringe version seen last summer was a superior display of raw emotion.

The Aussie loudmouth can clearly bark out a yarn, yet this time he was too distracted by his pre-meltdown gonzo exploits.

The confessional was punctuated by over-long accounts of being thumped by thugs and sexual escapades that would shame Casanova. And despite protestations of vulnerability, there was a distinct whiff of bar-room machismo.

This is the final part of a trilogy that charts Burns's recent yo-yo life and is definitely worth seeing for anyone who thinks modern stand-ups tend to play it safe.

Sober Not Clean might be a flawed comic postcard from the edge, but at its best it is also chillingly compelling.

Until 24 March (0870 429 6883).
