David Cross
American beauty: David Cross hosts a mix of US oddballs at the 100 Club

By Bruce Dessau
28 Jun 2007

David Cross brings his friends and Scottish stand-up Frankie Boyle feature among this week's top five comedy shows.

David Cross & Friends
100 Club, W1

The last few chances to see a little bit of American comedy club culture in Oxford Street. Cross is a gifted, natural satirist, best known as Tobias Funke in sitcom Arrested Development. Here he hosts a welcome mix of US oddballs, including deadpan Todd Barry, eccentric Eugene Mirman and kooky Kristen Schaal. Plus a different token Brit each night. (0871 220 0260) Until Sat 30 June, 7.30pm.

Frankie Boyle
Hen & Chickens, N1

This Scottish stand-up, best known for his appearances on BBC2's Mock The Week, is making a name for himself as one of the most brutally witty gagsmiths around. Boyle fires out humour with ruthless efficiency, mixing nononsense observational humour wth a slightly sinister streak. Imagine a warped Billy Connolly and you are getting there. (020 7704 2001) Fri 29 June, & Sun 1 July, 9.30pm.

25 Years of New Variety
Hackney Empire, E8

Another night of nostalgia. The Hackney Empire presents a bill of acts who got their first breaks back in the Eighties, in the clubs run by ex-Empire artistic director Roland Muldoon. Tonight comedy magician Otiz Cannelloni introduces turns from Felix Dexter, Jenny Eclair, Hattie Hayridge plus relative Nineties novices Andrew Maxwell, Tim Vine and Nina Conti. (020 8985 2424) Sat 30 June, 8pm.

Peyvand Khorsandi & Shappi Khorsandi
Washington, NW3

Humour is certainly a family affair for the Khorsandis. Father Hadi was a satirist in Iran before the family became refugees and moved to London. His daughter, Shappi, has already made her name over here, and for these shows she is joined by her brother, Peyvand, who, like his sister, mixes mainstream humour with reflections on his own multi-cultural experiences. (07983 486839) Sun 1 July & Mon 2 July, 8pm.

Natalie Haynes
Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, NW1

Two chances to catch frighteningly intelligent if occasionally patronising Haynes in this beautiful al fresco setting. Expect plenty of fast-paced thoughts on one of Haynes's favourite subjects, telly detectives - which is apt as the way the weather is at the moment you may need Columbo's Mac to keep you dry and one of Starsky's wrap-around woolly cardigans to keep you warm. (08700 601811) Fri 29 June, 6.50pm & 11pm.

Details are correct at the time of publication - please check with venue before booking.
