John Holmes, Metro 8 Aug 2007

Watching Debbie Does Dallas - The Musical, you're constantly asking 'why?'. Why does Erica Schmidt's stage adaptation of Jim Clark's infamous 1978 porno flick feature no gratuitous nudity? And why, more importantly, is it so irresistibly enjoyable?

Debbie Does Dallas - The Musical will disappoint anyone wanting an hour of smut: all the sex scenes have been replaced by songs. The new version celebrates the plot - a tenuous yet positively Shakespearean story by porno standards, about dippy cheerleader Louise Dearman striving to work with the Dallas Cowboys.

The songs aren't particularly memorable; the production succeeds instead because of its boundless energy. Some thrilling choreography accompanies the musical numbers, most notably when evil cheerleader Lisa invites Debbie's boyfriend Dick to an orgy.

There are innuendos galore, yet the cast manages to offer a slushy if rather warped moral message and carry off the show with endearing innocence.
Until Aug 27 (not Aug 13 and 20), Udderbelly's Pasture, 5.45pm, £10.50 to £14. www.udderbelly.co.uk
