Satisfaction is a feel-good rock dance-athon that, on paper, sounds just great. It's set to 20-or-so tunes by the Rolling Stones and simply evokes their themes rather than tells a story. It's full of unstoppable nostalgia, but West End dance shows are about nostalgia, and all you want is the chance to clap along to the songs that remind you of your youthful red roostering and not getting what you want.

The problem, and it's a problem the size of a planet, is that Satisfaction is the work of Peter Schaufuss, the one-time director of English National Ballet. As a dancer, Schaufuss charmed all. As a choreographer he veers between the loopy and the laughable.

His last ballet was about Princess Diana, complete with Camilla "riding" Prince Charles and, oh lordy, dancing tampons. It was widely derided, crazily spurring Schaufuss to plan ballets about Princes Charles and William.

Which is all a lead-up to tell you that Satisfaction is an under-powered, under-choreographed muddle. Instead of having the humour and energy of a rock concert, it is two slow hours of dated sentimentality.

Schaufuss wants to bring ballet to the people and move it on with new ideas yet he is stuck in his own past. If he wanted to bring things up to date, he would have chosen a modern-day rebel such as Amy Winehouse. Even with the vintage appeal of the Stones, Schaufuss's choreography looks 30 years behind. His style is an old-fashioned mix of exaggerated split kicks and silly synchronised routines (think Bucks Fizz in Eurovision mode), while the angsty solos are dire.

There's also the phoney hint of prim ballet dancers succumbing to the wild ways of rock'n' roll, when we all know they often hang out together. ENB's current chief used to be mates with Freddie Mercury and choreographed Queen's I Want to Break Free video.

The able, young dancers do their best, but there's little hope when they're asked to move like chickens. If I was Mick Jagger I'd be hopping mad. He probably thought Schaufuss would work magic on his songs.

Schaufuss, meanwhile, will grumble about sniffy critics not appreciating his work, but Satisfaction is flat and uninspired compared with the many brilliant ballets that are set to pop music. If you see Love Songs (to Aretha Franklin), Billboards (Prince), or Return (James Brown) you'll know what I mean.

Until 8 September. 0870 890 1101
