Sparky romance

It's always gratifying to see new musicals on the Fringe. Here, a group of hyper-neurotic, over articulate New York guys and dolls lament the vagaries of the dating scene. This being the Big Apple, these sassy young people spend lots of time doing perky things over - and with - coffee, in cafes where the waiting staff are never short of an aphorism or six.
So far, so rip-off-Friends-meets-low-budget-Hollywood, but Joshua Salzman (music) and Ryan Cunningham (book and lyrics) steer their piece, a kind of Two Brides for Two Brothers, into occasional emotional depths that will resonate with anyone in a romantic tizzy.
Nerdy greetings card writer Austin (Daniel Boys) is a bit of a twit throughout but, as charmingly played by Jodie Jacobs, photographer Marcy, the off-on object of Austin's affections, displays a touching vulnerability beneath her can-do social veneer.
Robert McWhir delivers a sparky production but, even in this small space, the lack of microphones for the actors is sorely felt.
Clever lyrics rapidly delivered are lost repeatedly. This glitch, however, can be fixed far more easily than the woeful absence of dime-store agony aunts in my local Starbucks.

"I Love You Because" has all the qualities we associate with an outstanding American musical: Sondheim-like, brilliantly performed by an attractive cast of six, witty and clever lyrics, delicious music, funny, touching, corny, sexy. The review in the New York Times of the original 2006 off-Broadway production summed it up:
'The authors, both out of the New York University graduate program in musical theater writing, bill this as "a modern-day telling of 'Pride and Prejudice' with the genders reversed," but don't let that scare you away; no CliffsNotes needed. As for the story, well, it ends up exactly where you know it will, because this whole show is constructed by formula. But who cares? It's terrific, refreshing fun.'
