Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs

Description: Former 'EastEnder' Ross Kemp stars as the nasty Henchman in the New Wimbledon Theatre's seasonal production. Comedy, hisses and boos, and romance are in order, with the likes of Warwick Davis as the Chief Dwarf and Aimie Atkinson as the eponymous maiden.

All that glitters: Bobby Davro, Ross Kemp and Arvid Larsen in Snow White
All that glitters: Bobby Davro, Ross Kemp and Arvid Larsen in Snow White

Ross Kemp and Bobby Davro: it's the kind of gloriously improbable combination that only panto could throw up. Those glumly expecting the sort of unlovely turns that blokes from the telly are too wont to provide at this time of year might well choke on their bumper bags of sweeties, however, as this most un-gruesome twosome make Snow White a winter's delight. The crucial thing is that Kemp and Davro don't look as though they're doing this solely with January's tax bill in mind.

I wrote scathingly yesterday about big boy panto producers First Family Entertainment, yet this show, written and directed by Peter Denyer, succeeds on every count for which near neighbour Richmond fails. There's passion and commitment from the appealing cast, not to mention the sparkliest set this side of Disneyland. If there's one thing on which panto should never stint, it's glitter.

Davro sets the exuberant tone, bouncing onstage as Muddles and hurling so many almost decent quips at us that we submit happily to the joke offensive. Amusingly, Kemp's evil Henchman is no Grant Mitchell-type butch thug but a musical theatre-loving bachelor in exuberant hat and cloak. Snow White (Aimie Atkinson) can certainly hold a tune and she and her Prince enact the swiftest falling-in-love in panto history, at just under 30 seconds. Comprehensively delightful.

We went to see this last week - there were 4 kids aged 18m - 8, and 4 grown ups. Loved it! Bobby Davro was excellent (as he was last year) - jokes for the kids, some naughty bang up to date laughs for the grown ups (canoes, lost discs, Northern Rock). Ross Kemp was a bit camp, but didn't seem to mind sending himself up. Everyone looked like they were having a great time. Songs were great - nice mixture and we especially liked the song from Hairspray at the finale. Incidentally I met some of the cast a couple of weeks previously starting the Wimbeldon. Christmas Festival - they were lovely !
