It gets wild in the West

West Side Story Suite dancers
Multi-tasking: the dancers in Jerome Robbins's West Side Story Suite also sing

It's often said that George Balanchine adored America. He was frequently photographed wearing the cowboy garb of checked shirt and bootlace tie, and, of course, he choreographed for Broadway and Hollywood. You sense his affection for his adopted home in ballets like Western Symphony, a mini masterpiece whose cleverness and sheer good fun you can't overstate.

It depicts cowboys and saloon girls, the boys in stetsons and the girls in tutus frillier than carnations. They dance in a corner of the Wild West to Hershy Kay's incomparable tunes, and evoke both ballet, square dancing and the galloping prairies. City Ballet were fabulous in it. All understood the humour of the piece, as well as the rigour of its steps.

Along with Balanchine's Tarantella, sensationally danced by Daniel Ulbricht and Ashley Bouder, it was easily the highlight of the final programme in City Ballet's four-programme visit. "Ballet and Broadway" celebrates the cross-over between the supposed divide, something Balanchine achieved with style and ease.

Shortly before Jerome Robbins died in 1998, he made a version of his West Side Story for NYCB. They danced it last night, and unexpectedly it felt an unbalanced reduction. One problem is that there is no "Pretty" sequence, meaning the heroine isn't introduced, and then she barely dances at all.

However, she does sing, as do all the dancers, only not very well. Robbins aficionados will be disappointed, as they will be by Thou Swell, a lukewarm piece by Peter Martins to the music of Richard Rodgers.
