There’s something charming about Gigi. And what could be more enchanting than an open air theatre setting. Providing the rain holds off, Regent’s Park provides the ideal surroundings in which to see such a colourful and vibrant production.
Famed for their widely known musical My Fair Lady, Lerner and Loewe echo similar sentiments in both shows. But this time in a darker and more cutting fashion.
The story stems from the 1944 novel by French writer Colette about a wealthy man, high up the social ladder, who falls in love with a young Parisian girl being groomed for a career as a grande cocotte. Set against the Belle Époque of Paris, the play breaks convention and shows the class system for all its flaws; mocking the expectations that come with high society.
The musical has not been staged in London for more than 20 years and marks a return to Britain for Frasier and Will & Grace star Millicent Martin as Mamita and Fiddler On the Roof actor Topol. The Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee takes on the role of Honore. And he does so with flair. His distinctive voice and mischievous smile is somewhat endearing. Both as a narrator and character he is a pleasure to watch.
Lisa O’Hare plays the title part. Formerly Mary Poppins in the West End, and Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady on the US tour she was an obvious candidate; capturing the innocence of Gigi beautifully. Her scenes with Thomas Borchert as Garcon are some of the most engaging.
Directed by Timothy Sheader, the show features the songs Thank Heaven for Little Girl, The Night They Invented Champagne, and I Remember It Well. Coupled with choreograpy by Olivier Award winner Stephen Mear, certain numbers are irresistible.
But it is appearance that steals the show. From the exquisite costume to the rich set, you cannot help being attracted to the visuals in Gigi; fitting for a production that’s emphasis is on the importance of the aesthetic.
The theatre grounds open 90 minutes before evening performances and 30 minutes before morning and afternoon shows. So be sure to absorb the atmosphere and enjoy a pre-theatre supper or light snack. In keeping with the outdoor theme, below is another suggestion…
